Cats & Birds & Windows

Window collisions are a big problem for birds, and, as with cats, there are simple actions you can take to prevent these unnecessary bird deaths.

While many people think that skyscrapers are the biggest issue, ninety percent of these collisions are with windows in individual houses, about nine per cent from low-rise buildings, and less than one per cent from high rises and skyscrapers. Making windows visible to birds is the best solution. Other solutions include mitigating factors that attract birds or put them at higher risk, such as, placing features that attract birds (such as bird feeders) a safe distance from the windows.

The Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) and Nature Canada created a very useful resource with all of the information a homeowner needs to prevent birds from flying into windows. FLAP_HomeOwnerBrochure_NC_E
