Laval introduces Mandatory Spay Neuter Bylaw

As of January 1, 2018, Laval Quebec introduced bylaw making it mandatory to spay-neuter cats and dogs over 6 months of age unless the owner has a breeding permit. In 2019, microchipping of pets will also be required.

The new by laws are part of an effort to reduce overpopulation and euthanization rates.

Veterinarian Enid Stiles said spaying and neutering animals is a good strategy to reduce the number of pets winding up being euthanized. “I think it’s a great step for more responsible pet ownership. We know we have a population problem in a lot of the cities, in Montreal pretty much throughout, and this is one step to trying to eliminate that problem,” said Stiles.
