Canada’s birds are in trouble — some species have declined by over 90% in the last 40 years. The number of Canadian Bird Species at Risk increased 100% between 2001 and 2017.

Habitat destruction and climate change are taking their toll, and Nature Canada works to address those issues. But a lot of bird deaths are associated with other human activities and their consequences.  Save Bird Lives is Nature Canada’s overall initiative to help Canadians understand how our daily actions and decisions affect birds and how to avoid unintended consequences.

Environment Canada research estimates that between 130 and 435 million birds a year die as a direct result of human activity (other than climate change and habitat loss). Cats are thought to cause 75% of that impact, with collisions with human structures (e.g. windows, cars) accounting for much of the rest.
